What “The Secret” is not.
I’m going to give you my thoughts on what The Secret is not. But, first I cannot help myself — I must review last night’s (Mar.11) episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, because it is relevant to what The Secret IS and what The Secret IS NOT. Guests on the show were Roseanne Barr who was focused on her issue of the Administration’s forged documents proving that we got into a b.s. war. And the other guest was the cool and persuasive Deepak Chopra. I don’t know any of these people, so I do not wish to pass judgment on them. I am only making an observation, as a viewer and someone who has actually watched the entire film, “The Secret.” As to the celebrities on the show, none watched the film nor read the book. Mr. Maher, in his sideways way, tossed the book flippantly in front of him and continued to bash the ideas, of which he knows nothing of. He passed it off as merely the power of positive thinking. Now, Roseanne Barr put down The Secret using the victims of New Orleans as an example — she whines, “Oh, maybe they didn’t pray enough.” Suggesting that praying is what The Secret is about. Again, comments from one that hasn’t even read or watched the film. Celebs are great at what they do, but can be annoying at times when they abuse their privilege. Now, Deep….he is a good guy, someone that has an eastern sensibility about him. By the end of the segment, he instructs Bill. (I’m paraphrasing) “Bill, why are you putting so much power into talking about this book….focus on the solution.” This is very much what The Secret talks about. And then, he continues…..”If you want more compassion in the world, than start with yourself.” Perfect! Exactly one of the ideas of The Secret! For Rosie, I retort. Of course there are circumstances out of our control, such as natural diaster of Katrina. We shouldn’t make light of that tragedy. But, food for thought (from The Secret) and something we have all heard at one time or another is: Make lemonade from lemons. I personally have two dear friends who were victims of Katrina. One is living in a trailer park after losing his home. He is remarkable in his attitude. I never once heard him whine about who’s fault it is, or who to blame, or sue, etc., etc. He immediately lived in the “solution” not staying stuck in the problem. Some people live the ideas of The Secret naturally. (Anyone famous and successful) They make that choice. If you remain stuck in any of life’s problems, you are preventing yourself from moving on. Another comment Rosie made that I found amusing, because it is right out of The Secret that she was trying to put down, but inadvertantly supporting….was that Jesus said you have to do the work for what you want. Yes, yes, another “Secret” idea. It is not Wishing, praying, hoping. It is asking, making your intention out loud, feeling great about it and effortlessly in attitude, working towards that goal. Why is this so repulsive to the three rich and famous folks who already have what they want. And, they all got to where they are in their careers by wanting it, setting the intention in motion, feeling great and joyful about it while they were doing the work. I bet, Bill never said to himself, “Oh, I don’t think I could ever do an interview with Larry King”. Or — “Oh, I’ll never get my own talk show, so I won’t even try.” PLEASSSEEEE.
Now, here’s what the secret is not. Wishing, praying, pleading, hoping, begging, positive thinking, laziness, being a work-aholic, stressing, worrying, demanding and here’s the big one…..doubtful. Do not ever use any of these approaches.
Instead — focus on what it is you want, state it, feel great about it, visualize what you want, and keep it alive by beginning with being grateful for all that you have in your life. Write it down. Look at it anyime you feel anything but joyful. And whistle while you work, all the while believing in yourself and your efforts. Ignore negative thoughts from yourself and others. Keep focusing on what you want – not what you don’t want. If you want more love, start with yourself (As Deep suggested). And Bill, if you want more honesty in the world, start with yourself.
